On what finger should an engagement ring be worn?



I've noticed many Nigerian ladies wearing their engagement rings on their middle finger.  The middle finger is the one next to the pointer or index finger. Many Nigerians even call that finger the engagement finger. Very recently my sister and I got into an argument on which finger should adorn the engagement. This argument made me do a little research to help validate my pre-existing knowledge.

The engagement ring is supposed to be worn on the ring finger, this is the finger where the wedding band is also worn. Both wedding band and engagement ring can be stacked together after the wedding. But before the wedding, the engagement ring should be worn on the ring finger. 

I don't know where Nigerians got the idea of wearing the engagement ring on the middle finger from.
